Fearless City: How a City Rises Up Differently, Together

When the 2008 Great Recession sent Spain’s economy into a tailspin, sparking a catastrophic wave of housing evictions, in Barcelona a variety of different movements coalesced in ways that set a new precedent for movement politics and political parties.

This story tracks groups like La PAH that supported people threatened with eviction, the Indignados movement that erupted in its hundreds of thousands across the city, and Barcelona en Comú, a new movement-political party that saw itself as part of these social movements. To slightly spoil the ending, Barcelona en Comú won the Mayoral elections in 2015 and 2019 and has inspired urban parties across the world, including most recently Zohran Mamdani in New York City.

Building on the themes in Conscious Tribes, this story shows how making sense of the public dimensions of our private lives can transform our sense of agency. It also reveals how movements build power by collaborating across very different kinds of tribes — and why working locally with the people most affected can be more powerful than we might think.
